Virtual Private Networks (VPNs)
VPN technology has come a long way since the first end-user solutions
were delivered in the mid 90s. The technology, tied with improvements
in connectivity options, now offers a viable alternative to existing
dedicated leased-line solutions. Where existing WAN links are in
place, e.g. frame relay-based solutions, site-to-site VPNs provide
a highly cost-effective replacement option, allowing organisations
to significantly reduce the cost of their communications infrastructure.
With the introduction in June 2003 of the 'Flexible Working' directive,
the potential for utilising VPNs within organisations has grown
substantially as employers may be required to provide some of their
employees with the ability to work (remotely) from home. In this
scenario VPN technology can also enable a cost-effective solution
to be deployed in a controllable and sustainable manner. Additional
controls can be implemented which allow centralised administration
and reporting of such an infrastructure, ensuring that, even with
employees not connecting directly to the company network, they and
their PCs are still subject to compliance with defined security
policies and software profiles.
Ultima is able to provide a number of industry-leading VPN solutions
based around best of breed products such as Check
Point and
Nokia.
These solutions can be user-focused, site-focused or a combination
of both. We always aim to ensure that the required business benefits
are realised in line with expectations and that the projects are
implemented in a time and cost conscious fashion.
