Following the commoditisation of the Internet over recent years and the number of organisations increasing their on-line presence, the potential for unauthorised users to access both private and corporate data has significantly increased. The media has capitalised on this to ensure full public coverage of the larger hacking cases, especially as the penalties for such crimes have been the subject of ongoing legislation across the world.

Vendors such as Checkpoint, ISS and TripWire all provide a range of products aimed at further securing the enterprise environment from intrusion and dealing with the risks in a controllable manner. Additionally, traditional firewall vendors are now integrating elements of Intrusion Detection into their product ranges (Gartner has already forecasted that this trend will increase as the firewall market continues to evolve).
